Mr.Gorbachov
"Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall!"...Ronald Regan's quote and the beginning of the fall of the Soviet Union's communism. But , as ridiculous as it sounds, communism was the best thing for keeping Democracy flourishing. The events of 9-11 happened partially because of the Immigration and Naturalization Service's lack of awareness, open border policies, and lack of knowledge of the region. As the only two world powers in the eighties and nineties, the Soviet Union and the United States were fighting to impose their ideologies on other countries. Whenever there was a coup or an uprising in any part of the world, both powers were there offering aid, financial and otherwise. Many of these Third World countries would play both sides against the middle taking aid from both sides...and both sides knew it. But, rather than having communism, the United States backed Osama Bin Laden, Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, factions in Kosovo, rebels in Iran and Iraq, and who could ever forget the infamous "Bay of Pigs"? Both countries were active in espionage in these countries. They were trying to take over and discover what the other world power was doing. But, with the decline of the Soviet Union and China's closed door policy (except Taiwan), communism as we knew it faded. Even though the United States has more troops in foreign countries than any power in the world, with its main rival gone, the government has become complacent and has lost its aggressiveness. When it came to foreign policy, the United States needs competition from a foreign power. It needs to feel pressure from somewhere to be alert. With the Soviet Union gone, the United States pulled out of many countries including Afghanistan. Without a Cold War, or a foreign threat, and with an open border policy and the political correctness that's in this country, the United States is in trouble. Oh, for the good old days of communism!
