Patriotism... Flags... and Other Stuff
On the eve of 9-11, flags are flyin' high from New York to Nebraska to Los Angeles. No, not American flags, but Yankee, "Go Big Red", and Laker flags respectively. There are more Yankee, Laker, and "Go Big Red" flags flying in New York, Los Angeles and Nebraska. They have replaced flying the American flag. The patriotic bumper sticker has long been removed at the local car wash. Country singer, Lee Greenwood, has gone back into retirement after a revival of his song, "I Love Being an American" made him hot again. The National Guard, after becoming part of the decor at the airports in the country, are gone. The illegal aliens are back working the security check points at the airports. Less than two months after the September 11th bombings, most Americans, who were not directly affected by the terrorists, have put 9-11 in the rear view mirror of their lives. Americans are now concerned with things like, "What!, Rosie's gay?", "Boy, those Osbournes are wacky!", and "Star Wars made how much this weekend?" The war has fallen into the same category as the "Pet Rock", the "Lava Lamp", and the "Cabbage Patch Doll". The Clinton jokes are back on late night TV and Osama Bin Laden's name has fallen into the same class as Joey Buttafuco and Kato Kaelin. Instead, the news has chosen to focus on the never-to-be-resolved Israeli Palestinian issue. All that has done is to bring out the anti Semitic feelings in the United States. Many Americans are asking why they should care about the Jews? Meanwhile, the killing of four thousand Americans is going unnoticed by many in this country. Freedom does come with some responsibility...being aware and caring would be a couple. "One who doesn't pay attention to the mistakes of the past is destined to repeat them." That's the path America is heading down. Before the United States continues its Marshall Plan for "The World", it must protect and keep its borders and people alert and aware of what is happening and what has been happening around them. Many Americans are getting laser eye surgery but are unable to see what is in front of their eyes. The United States is still under siege...within its own borders. I know we live in a McDonald's Society, but Americans should wake up every morning and remember what happened on September 11th. Keep flying those flags...American that is!
